Sony has caved and released cross-platform play in beta for Fortnite

Finally, cross-platform play arrives for Fortnite on PS4

Cross-play between consoles has been a hotly debated topic as of late. With Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Switch being fully on-board for a number of titles, it took Epic Games’ popular title Fortnite to finally strong arm Sony PlayStation into allowing cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Sony recently received a ton of backlash from consumers over their reasoning for not allowing cross-platform play for Fortnite – the world’s most popular game. The problem was, for Sony at least, that they had no real reason for not allowing it. What was worse, for most players, was that an Epic Games account linked to the PlayStation network was not allowed to access it on the Nintendo Switch.

This is a major step forward for PlayStation as the draw to Fortnite is being able to play with your friends no matter what platform you choose.  For Sony to allow this means the flood gates are almost over as the question of cross-platform play is now being asked for other popular titles including the recently launched FIFA 19. The issue which players now face is developers and publishers not interested in cross-platform, a problem which we will hopefully see rectified soon.

The much-needed move by PlayStation now shifts responsibility to the developers who will need to ensure cross-platform play is a readily available feature as the future of consoles become more inclusive across all platforms. Fortnite is the beginning, but there are still many questions as what’s next. Sony have always prided themselves in creating superior software when it comes to the never-ending console war, but with cross-platform play for popular multiplayer titles, consoles will be based on personal preference – a fight Sony still hopes to win favor regarding exclusives on the Sony PlayStation.

It’s almost time for a new PlayStation as the PS4 has now been out for almost 5 years. Whether new generation consoles will be better equipped for cross-platform still remains to be seen, but for now we can enjoy cross-platform play on beta which arrived with the start of Season 6.
